One of the biggest names in online recruiting, Simply Hired is said to be shutting down its operations from June 26th onwards. The firm that has helped millions find jobs could end up being the cause for unemployment for its own employees! The company has informed its workers about the “uncertain future” – we all know what that could mean…

Simply Hired, the newest yet most challenging online job portal in the US and globally had been aggressively moving against the competition. The numbers claimed by the organization easily puts it right on top of big players in the market like Indeed and Monster. Simply Hired is active in 24 countries and available in a dozen languages. It raked-up a stunning 34 million dollars in investment from big names like Fox, Guy Kawasaki, Foundation Capital and Ronald Conway.

Back in 2007, Google was eyeing the firm for acquisition but it never materialized. Had the deal gone through, the largest search engine on the planet could have easily scaled up a new vertical, the job market. While Indeed does a great job of the same, Google’s experience in delivering search combined with Simply Hired’s claimed numbers could have spelt the end of big players like LinkedIn.

All is not over yet as there are talks of acquisition by other firms and it is more likely to be part-acquisition due to lack of funds and this will still lead to a number of employees finding themselves out of jobs.

Also rumored is that Recruit, the Japanese firm which took over Indeed is planning to acquire Simply Hired. A lot of discussion boards online have emphasized on how Simply Hired focussed on quality over quantity (Indeed being the leader of quantity amongst Job portals). A merger between the two can cause a serious upset to the competition. It could also make the quality job search easier while making it very simple for recruiters.

However, now that one big player is out of the game, it is up to other big players like LinkedIn, Indeed, Sulekha and Monster to cater to the needs of job seekers and recruiters. The take away from this unjust end to Simply Hired is that Job Portals will receive traffic and see the light of the day only until the job seekers or recruiters find the site and the listings to be useful for them. Brand value and traffic numbers do not mean a thing otherwise!
