Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in the Accounting and Finance positions available that match my experience. Four months after leaving my last job as Business Operations Coordinator, COVID happened and I could not return to the USA as I was in my country Nepal. I stayed in Nepal for 5 years. Now I am ready again to return/join the workforce after a 5 year hiatus. I believe that my academic coursework and broad range of experience at various workplaces provide me with the background necessary to successfully fill the position that you have described.
My position at WMATA dealt with creating monthly and weekly KPI metrics and reports related to metro access.I also prepared various KPI reports to present trends to all applicable levels of the organization. I tested new programs and databases, identified errors and made necessary suggestions.
I worked as an accountant at University of Maryland University College. In this position, I handled complex invoicing systems, to prioritize, escalate and follow up effectively. I extensively used v-lookup and macros to maintain records and to research on the third-party military students’ invoices, payments, collections, refunds, financial aid and tuition assistance and various data. Using PeopleSoft financials, Air Force Portal and Salesforce I generated data and prepared various internal/external financial ledgers, schedules, exhibits and summaries of military student’s accounts. I also assisted students and various departments with their inquiry daily.
In my position as Accounting Analyst at Washington Metro, I was responsible for the complex analysis of financial data derived from PeopleSoft Financials and interpreting that data utilizing advanced Microsoft Office tools like excel. I Identified and resolved erroneous data entries by working with Grant Analyst and IT to resend missing data. I also assisted the Procurement department in streamlining the contract documents. I have also acquired quite the knowledge of Federal Grants with minimal training. This work took advantage of my data analysis skills, my ability to interact with senior colleagues at work, my ability to think strategically, and work with a high volume of detailed data. I consistently received good feedback on my job performance from peers and management.
From 2007 to 2013, I worked as a Utilities Analyst at University Facilities in Georgetown University. My first duty in this position required me to verify utility billings to help ensure effective control of utility costs; verify quantities and unit rates in billings; investigated variances and took appropriate actions to correct inaccurate billings, including resolution of billing problems with utility companies. I was also responsible for maintaining records for billing with each utility company and cost recovery from internal and external users such as the Medstar hospital and Epicurean. Getting correct metering numbers from each university building was a big part of my activity. I used metered usage information to generate historical reports for forecasting and planning our department’s budget. My day-to-day job also involved communicating metering data with the engineering team and breaking down this information for accurate utility usage for each university building.
My role in the department also included interacting with four supervisors of Utilities in a weekly basis and providing them with weekly updates on their individual cost center budget and actual spending. My monthly assignment required me to work with a budget analyst and provide her with Journal vouchers and accruals in a timely manner. I was directly involved in providing utilities monthly usage and cost to University Facilities CFO and Assistant Director. I participated in the budget meetings with CFO identifying issues, deliverables requirements, establishing agreement
on timelines, and follow-up to ensure adherence. I was also involved in a University’s sustainability program providing sustainability staff with the carbon emission data.
Before taking a job as a Utilities Analyst, I worked as an Accounting Assistant in the Department of Financial Affairs and Center for Intercultural Education and Development (CIED) at Georgetown University. While at Financial Affairs, it was my privilege to learn general aspects of accounts payable departments including knowing about RX and GD cost centers, account codes and funds associated with each department. Performing Accounts Payable duties which included processing a large volume of expense vouchers, invoices and petty cash reimbursement in a timely manner required detailed orientation, accuracy and efficiency because the disbursement of the entire university’s expenses depends on this department. Additionally, I trained on an accounting program called PeopleSoft. I got the opportunity to become familiar with University financial systems and business practices which is also beneficial to perform the duties outlined in the vacancy announced.
My job in the CIED department is mainly related to international student taxes. Resolving issues relating to tax exempt filings, coordinating document requests from the IRS, reviewing and responding to document requests, and researching tax issues were my routine work.
My education further helped me gain the knowledge of various accounting principles like GAAP and SOX. My enclosed resume further illustrates my education and employment background. You can reach me in the phone number listed below. I am a USA citizen. Excellent references are available upon request.
I appreciate you for looking at my application.
Sincerely,
Mita Shrestha
