In 1995, with the launch of Water Online, one of the first online-only publications was born. Out of its success evolved VerticalNet, the leading B2B publisher and ecommerce company founded during the first Internet boom. In 1998, VerticalNet went public and began trading on the NASDAQ exchange. The company experienced a furious expansion fueled by Dot Com Bubble. VerticalNet grew to almost 2,000 employees and operated over 65 industry-specific business-to-business (B2B) websites.Like many of its contemporaries, VerticalNet suffered a significant decline as the Dot Com Bubble burst and began pursuing the sale of the publishing arm of the business. In July of 2002, the assets were sold to Rick and Terry Peterson of Peterson Brothers, Inc., the owners of Jameson Publishing (then Corry Publishing, Inc.) in Erie, PA. At the time of acquisition, the new company was renamed to VertMarkets.
