In 1947, a local businessman, Arthur Johnson Grymes, broke ground on a state of the art, world class hotel. On September 3, 1949, four-thousand people gathered for the opening of the Tidewater Inn, which was soon known as one of the finest hotels in the Mid Atlantic Region.
