The Creative Department, Inc. was founded by Philip Eitzen and Charles Mackey in 1971. Phil and Chuck were both vice presidents and creative directors at N.W. Ayer & Son. The initial concept for The Creative Department, Inc. was to serve ad agencies and other clients as a creative resource for print and broadcast advertising. As the business developed, it evolved into a full-service corporate and marketing communications firm providing creative and production services for a broad spectrum of client projects in all media, including promotion materials, annual reports, corporate identity, employee communications, advertising and web site development. In 1977 James Jarratt joined the firm as an equal partner when Chuck Mackey resigned from the firm to open his own freelance writing business.
