The Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMT™) industry consortium was formed in May 2009 by ARM, Hynix Semiconductor, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics and Silicon Image to create the first-of-its-kind industry standard dynamic random access memory (DRAM) based on a serial rather than the standard parallel interface. SPMT technology was developed in direct response to mobile service providers’ demands for a memory solution that could enable a whole new generation of mobile devices capable of providing more data-intensive, media-rich capabilities such as high-definition video and action gaming, mobile projection, Internet browsing, e-mail, multimedia applications and music at competitive prices. SPMT-enabled memory and SoC chips will deliver the bandwidth flexibility and low power requirements that are going to accelerate the merging of PC functions with that of mobile functions into a single product.
