Spectrum Health Companies, consisting of Spectrum Community Health, Inc. and Carefree Living, was formed in Minnesota in 1982. Company Size 201-500 employees Locally owned and operated by founder Merle Sampson, Merle has been dedicated to health care and assisted living for seniors and others in need throughout his adult life. With the help of our dedicated and professional staff, Spectrum provides health and personal care services in a variety of community settings. We strive to help individuals attain and maintain optimum health and independence. Spectrum is a full-service, community-based health care provider that is responsive to the changing needs of our clients and communities served. The current family of Spectrum Health Companies has evolved through initial start-up companies and acquisitions spanning over 30 years. Home care operations originated in two separate companies. Arrowhead Health Alternatives was founded in 1981 in Virginia, serving Northeastern Minnesota. Arrowhead Health Alternatives provided traditional home care services, assisted living and all aspects of therapy—physical, occupational and speech—in nursing homes and a stand-alone therapy center. Allied Health Alternatives was created in 1982 with headquarters in Minneapolis and established branch operations in Duluth, Grand Rapids, Willmar and Faribault, Minnesota. In 1998, a Rochester branch was added. The corporate functions of Allied Health Alternatives and Arrowhead Health Alternatives were merged in 2000 resulting in one corporate headquarters, but with the majority of staff based in Virginia and several in Minneapolis, with the new company called Spectrum Health Companies. Assisted living operations have evolved over the last 20 years with a major addition in 2002 with the purchase of 3 Carefree Living communities in Burnsville (95 suites), Brainerd (70 suites), and St. Cloud (70 suites), then construction of 46 suites in Ely in 2008, Cook (34 suites) in 2009, Silver Bay (35 suites) in 2010, Babbitt (38 suites) in 2012, Orr (32 Suites) in 2014, and Aurora (52 suites) in 2015. Spectrum had previously provided health care services to the original 3 Carefree Living buildings for 7 years prior to 2002. Spectrum also manages housing units for other owners."
