Founded in 1911 by what is now The United Methodist Church, SMU is a nonsectarian private institution offering undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in arts, business, engineering, humanities, law, science, and theology through seven schools. Some 11,000 students attend the university, which has a student-teacher ratio of 11:1. About 85% of the 660-member full-time faculty hold the doctorate or highest degree in their fields. SMU is housed in more than 75 buildings on its 165-acre main campus.
