Serving Our Neighbors Son Ministries Careers in Hilliard, OH

Suburban poverty has outpaced urban poverty for the first time in the United States (Brookings Institute 2005). The number of children receiving free or reduced school lunches in the Hilliard City School District increased from 2,158 in 2007 to 3,714 in 2013. The new face of suburban poverty is less concentrated and often goes unseen. Serving Our Neighbors (SON) Ministries began in 2007 as the Hilliard Free Summer Lunch program to address children’s hunger, a symptom of poverty. It has since grown from a loose idea into a faith-based not for profit organization, serving 44,960 free lunches to children at multiple locations with the help of more than 21 churches and 376 volunteers. SON partners with families in need in the Hilliard community to address instability. For example, parents with children in the summer lunch program shared the difficulties they faced, such as finding adult English classes.
