Since 1967, Hartley C. King, founder and president, has believed that people are his business. He employs more than 3,000 people who serve more than one million customers a month at Kings. The family restaurant chain opened in 1967 at the corner of Routes 48 and 30 in North Versailles.Dubbed "Kings Country Shoppes," this first location took on the name of Kings Family Restaurants – indicating that the place was indeed a restaurant and not a country store that served milk and butter. In the 70's, Hartley opened six locations and by the 80's the chain grew to 21.
