Habitat for Humanity Sarasota Inc. was founded in 1985. The founders believed that decent housing was the most important need in this community. Habitat's Mission is "to partner with God and community to provide decent afforable housing for people in need so that they may build better lives for their families." With the support of many churches, community organizations, corporations, individuals, foundations and thousands of volunteers, Habitat Sarasota has built 194 home in Sarasota County. In addition to Habitat's new construction, more than 88 existing homes have also been rehabilitated. With the number of foreclosures because of the downturn in the economy, hundreds of existing home are available for sale. Habitat is taking advantage and will continue to rehab homes for new Habitat owners.
