Established as an orphanage in 1891 by Duncan and Eunice C. Finch, Fred Finch Youth Center was founded on the principle that no one–regardless of their background, financial status, or personal challenges–should be neglected or forgotten. Little did they know how timeless their principles were.From 1891 to the 1950s, the needs of the community had changed. Fred Finch Youth Center changed its focus and began serving adolescents who were, at the time, considered “incorrigible.” Mental health treatment services were added to meet the needs of these young people. Foster youth were experiencing higher rates of poverty, joblessness, substance use, addiction, developmental disabilities, and emotional impairments than the general population.
