The Department of the Interior protects and manages the Nation's natural resources and cultural heritage; provides scientific and other information about those resources; and honors its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, and affiliated island communities. The Department has five mission areas that provide the framework for its overarching stewardship responsibilities and define its long-term areas of focus: - Provide natural and cultural resource protection and experiences - Sustainably manage energy, water, and natural resources - Advance Gov't-to-Gov't relationships with Indian Nations and honor commitments to Insular Areas - Provide a scientific foundation for decision making - Build a 21st Century Department of the Interior These combined mission areas contain 23 goals, including five high priority goals.
