About Columbus Literacy Council

The Columbus Literacy Council began in 1970 when Church Women United organized and trained literacy volunteers to assist Asian and Greek immigrants in learning English and preparing for citizenship. The intervening years have seen the Council grow to serve over 2,000 adults annually representing nearly 100 different ethnic groups, making it the largest private provider of adult literacy services in Central Ohio. This year we are again anticipating serving students, estimating our numbers to surpass 3,000 students. The Council programs include basic literacy, which serves native speakers; ESOL, which instructs adults for whom English is not their first language in social, life, financial, and employment-related English skills; family literacy, which engages the whole family in improving literacy skills; citizenship preparation; and workplace literacy training, which reaches the employed adult.
