Civic Schools is a new initiative of the Civic Ed Project, a non-profit organization founded in 2003 to prepare youth for active citizenship and revive the civic mission of education. Civic Schools helps public schools foster a climate for civic engagement and learning that prepares all students for lifelong participation in the civic life of their community, nation, and world. Building on research into best practices conducted by the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools, we believe a a “Civic School” must have the following four elements: (1) a clearly articulated statement of its civic mission and vision, (2) curricula that is rich in project-based learning, simulations of democratic processes, and service learning and utilizes pedagogy that promotes robust classroom discussion and debate, (3) a positive school climate that welcomes student voice in school governance, and (4) robust and sustainable school-community partnerships.
