CEM Insurance Company (“CEMIC”) was founded in 1982 with an entrepreneurial spirit and the vision of establishing a facility for specialty insurance programs. As a syndicate on the Illinois Insurance Exchange (later renamed “INEX”), the Company developed and successfully underwrote an Unemployment Compensation program for nonprofit organizations. Over time, the company diversified by writing programs such as professional liability coverages for accountants and lawyers, primarily in the nonprofit sector. In 1996, CEMIC withdrew from the INEX and began writing insurance as an admitted carrier in Illinois. In 2002, CEMIC was acquired by new ownership, which relocated the Company’s headquarters, expanded its state licensing and began developing new specialty programs.
