I was working as a financial adviser and took over a branch on Main Street of Santa Maria, California. As I looked out of my new office I saw the potholes and boarded up windows of shops. Gangs were coming in when the sun went down and took over the streets. The Hispanics lived on the west side of Broadway and Caucasians on the east. The town had become a ghetto. My frustration ran deep as I regretted my decision to take over the branch. I decided to take action. I talked with the neighboring town's former mayor about the their mural program. Then initiated our own mural society. We began painting the town and soon joined the local Santa Maria Beautiful organization. Together we started a dialogue with each other and the environment. Pretty soon we had award dinners with Hispanics and Caucasians in which both groups were taking more pride in their own and downtown's revitalization.
