The Beer Homebrewing industry has quadrupled in the last 10 years giving rise to a whole new generation of homebrewers who are more prone than their predecessors to open micro and more recently nano breweries. This in turn has fueled a tsunami in homebrewing technology compared with the wave of the '80's. Most of this new technology focuses on the "hot side" of the brewing process, involving highly sophisticated automation of the liquid transfer during mashing, boiling and cooling of the wort, prior to fermentation. However, very little corresponding attention has been given to the improving the technology of the fermentation process and monitoring the growth, happiness and overall ecosystem of the yeast.
