Founded in 1999, Breakthrough New York maximizes the academic achievement of high-potential, low-income students by offering a year-round, tuition-free program taught by outstanding high school and college students. Our program admits motivated, underserved public middle school students and equips them with the skills, knowledge, and support necessary to succeed at college preparatory high schools and attend four-year colleges. Breakthrough’s recruiting efforts target high-need public schools throughout New York City. Our students attend public schools that are typically preoccupied with remediation as opposed to college preparation. The Breakthrough program fosters the academic achievement and leadership skills of these young individuals and equips these students so they are poised to enter competitive highs schools and colleges.
