It's well known that experienced programmers are in high demand of late. Yet, finding your first job as a programmer may prove rather challenging. It might appear as if you may never be able to break into a career in programming, especially when you are trying to get your foot in the door. Typically, employers are keen to get experienced coders on board. So, how do you enter the field with no experience? Here are some tips to help you out.

Get Your Resume Ready

Whenever a leading IT firm has a job opening, they are burdened with the task of sorting through huge piles of resumes from aspiring programmers. It’s impossible for any company to call every applicant for interviews after the screening of resumes. Presenting your credentials immaculately on the resume can increase your odds of catching a recruiter’s eye. Avoid exaggerating on your skill set, though. Add only the coding skills that you are really good at.

Develop your own Apps

This is a great way to get some experience on your own to put on your resume. This is also a way to make some extra bucks on the side. You can start with mobile apps, as these can be developed by a single person. Once you have developed a few decent apps, you can have them submitted to a mobile app store. This way you can prove that you have the ability to program and thus set the employer free from their biggest fear – hiring someone who cannot code.

Create a Portfolio

You can start off by adding links to the apps you have developed. If you have done some work on your personal website, you can add that as well. Your portfolio site is as important as your job application. It helps in creating a good first impression and convincing prospective employers on why they should hire you. If you don’t have experience working for a client’s website, you can do some free work for a local charity’s website and display that too.

Get set for some live coding

Most employers would be keen to check your coding prowess during their recruitment process with some live tests, especially if you don’t have experience. Loads of practice is the key to cracking these live coding tests. You can use the abundant resources available online to prepare for your coding interview. This will help you to get used to the type of coding challenges usually given during such live tests.

So go ahead. Build the perfect portfolio and resume before heading to your first programming interview!
